There are some options you should consider when building your inground pool. Costs will vary greatly depending on the choice you opt for. Maybe you'll want to save some money and choose a prefabricated pool, or if you're willing to make a larger investment you can customize it to your specifications. In this article we'll discuss the options and prices for each.
Prefabricated pools
Pre-Made pools are the least expensive option. It will come with everything you need as a kit, and installation is pretty straightforward. It basically requires excavation to make a hole where the case of the pool fits in. They are usually made out of fiberglass, which is sufficiently durable. The limits of this option are that you won't be able to customize your pool, and you'll be limited by the size and shape of the prefabricated pool you choose.
For the total price you have to factor in the cost of the pool itself (around $8000 for a standard 15' X 30' rectangle) and the cost of hiring an excavator, a plumber, and an electrician.
Custom pools
The pricier option, but also the more customizable is having your pool built from scratch. After excavating, the walls and floor will be built by hand, and there are two basic options. First, there's the option of a steel frame covered with sand or concrete covered by a vinyl liner. For a 15' X 30' rectangle the price would be around $18,000.
The second option involves pouring concrete into a rebar framework, forming the walls and floor, and this would cost from $25,000 to $30,000 in total. For tiling you could expect an extra couple of thousand.
Additional costs to factor in
Once your pool is constructed, there are other costs you could factor in to your total, such as electric bills (about $50 per month or less depending if you have inground swimming pool lights), overall maintenance of your pool (shouldn't be expensive, but will require a bit of your time), and maybe a cover for the winter.
Building your pool definitely requires a strong initial investment. But you have to think of if it that way, an investment you are making to add value to your home, and entertainment for years to come. Keep that in mind when going over inground pool prices, and don't go for the cheapest option, it can be much more expensive in the long run if you have to pay for repairs.
